Each year, the DIAA National President sets a theme that is particularly relevant to the DIAA and the industry. The theme sets the direction for the DIAA and is picked up by all DIAA States in their annual conferences and events.
For 2017, the National President's theme is:
Where will I be in five years, and how will I get there?
At the start of my career in dairy production, my work activities centred on ensuring daily and weekly outputs were achieved, with little consideration for long-term planning. Similarly, when I worked in larger government departments, I observed limited scope for long-term strategic planning and goal setting, with the majority of strategic planning carried out many levels above my position.
With the advent of government reporting in smaller statutory authorities, strategic planning became an integral part of organisational activities. However, this was primarily a two-day, off-site working session, where we worked out strategic plans, filed them away, looked over them once or twice during the year and then came back the following year and repeated the exercise, with very little change to the previous year's strategic plan. Strategic planning is often met with a 'nice to do when I get around to it' attitude.
I believe that for a strategic plan to be effective, it needs to come down to the personal level. My president's theme for the coming year is, 'Where will I be in five years, and how will I get there?'
In setting the theme, it is my intention to inspire members to consider a flexible goal setting and planning approach on every level – personal, work environment and DIAA-wide, and to have ownership of what is required to get there.
