DIAA Victoria members are invited to celebrate the festive season with their dairy industry colleagues at the Duke of Wellington hotel on Tuesday, 5 December 2017.
Where: The Duke of Wellington, Level 1, 146 Flinders St (Corner Flinders and Russell St)
Built in 1850 and licensed in 1853, the Duke of Wellington has a rich and fascinating history spanning more than 160 years. The Duke of Wellington is Melbourne’s oldest licensed pub. The hotel was named after Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley (aka the Duke of Wellington). Wellesley famously led the British forces to defeat Napoleon in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and went on to become British Prime Minister in 1828. The Duke has a long list of colourful licensees, including football legend Brian ‘the Whale’ Roberts. The old saying “Have an ale with the Whale” resonates strongly with many Melbournians and is just one of the many slices of history that have contributed to The Duke’s iconic reputation.
